What about this scheme:
let's add two SFRs per Ri - say RiL and RiH - forming a 16-bit base register for Ri, which is then the offset. Each @Ri access would in fact acces RiH:RiL+Ri. Reset value of RiL and RiH being 0, this is fully backwards compatible.
Of course, base registers are banked.
