...try the AT89C51ED2.

Plugs in into your old devboard seamlessly. Or, if you don't have an "old devboard", stitch one together in 10 minutes (DIP40/PLCC44 socket, 7805, reset, MAX232, and go) - or try the 8052.SBC. You can run old memories with it if you want; and you can try the "new stuff", too. Believe me, it is really fine for a starter.

<shameless advertisement>And, if you want to feel something really really old, get BASIC52 from my site for it...</shameless advertisement> :-)
