I don't think the OP's goal is wrong - just that there is a easier, more user friendlier way of doing it. If the OP wants to use a parallel port - why not make a parallel port SPI programmer for the Atmel devices?

For me the programmer is just to load the code - my ultimate goal is to write code to perform something useful, so re-inventing an old method of loading code is a waste of my time as I'm being deflected from my true course.
