Perhaps you'd like to buy, rather than make, a board.

Try a Google search on NMIY-0031. That's a <$40 board that uses a standard 805x MCU and a full complement of RAM and ROM, if you choose to populate it all. It also supports the RS485 and RS232 serial I/O, along with an LCD.

That might keep you amused.
