Most people would not make a system and a ROM programmer, and they don't need counters nor inserting and removing ROM. Most people would use a single-FLASH-chip solution. Did you ever try any of proposed modern FLASH-based chip? I was always told by my parents, and I tell the same to my kids - if you think you don't like the food you are given for the first time, just try it, only a small piece of it.
