As a professional, if I am requested to work with discontinued chips for a good reason (as opposed to having a task to design a new product, where freedom of choice of components is granted), for example to keep working an old but valuable device, I do work with the discontinued chips.

As Mike refuses to tell us the motivation and the details, and insists on the obsolete parts and methods even after been listed better, cheaper, faster alternatives, I am inclined to think that this is his case.
