Only because we can, or for learning some useful? Because we can. We might learn something along the way, too. I've already learned about the video signal. :) If we make the system with standard and market aviable chips then may be some parts of the work will be usable for new real proyects. For example, if we can do a graphic chipset on a single '52 with a useful characterist then we can reuse this if we need a display but we can't asume the cost of an equivalent LCD. I only support the idea of using available chips in this project. If it can't be bought "new" then we shouldn't use it in the design. We should also try to use only chips that we can order in small quantities and that don't have 2-year backlogs. The idea is that any hobbyist that wants to build the system should be able to acquire the parts easily and build it himself without having to deal with obsolete or hard-to-buy parts.
