Mike,
As someone who still has fond memories of CP/M i must sadly decline the offer. As you may recall, ZCPR3 was an attempt to modernize CP/M and was seriously handicapped by the CP/M legacy, as was CP/M 3. If one was to build a z80 based platform today, that was not homage to Gary Kildall and Intergalactic Digital Research, you would most likely implement a system that expected more contemporary peripherals and software techniques. Also you would be doing it at z80.com not 8052.com. Saying this, i do agree that building a platform that ignores the '51 characteristics is somewhat artificial. This is why i promote the alternative of device abstraction and relative freedom of implementation. A MSC1211 with it's analog capability, neatly integrating into the '51 model, would be a nice platform to extend to video, large store; and what interesting waveforms could eminate from the four 16 bit DACs. Alternatively, a DS'390 with it large memory map and MAC would also not be a bad match for an Display, Store and a mix of i/o. A DS'420 would make a mean Basic52 platform especially when augmented with non-character i/o extensions for sound/video/prog. store. Re: CP/M: To this day i find myself speaking of "pip-ing" this to that, and very late at night i will find i start to enter "ed" command strings into my editor, even later i revert to TECO. regards, p |
