#77581 - Alternate forum software Responding to: ???'s previous message |
A damned big button linking people to the Intel "Bible" That could be done... would it help? There's a button to the FAQs and tutorials but yet questions that could be answered by reading either of those pages are asked repeatedly. The Bible is even bigger than the FAQs or tutorial. Will they really be read? Another button for next item in a thread - order to be determined by a cookie set to user preference. Good idea. This goes along with Erik's comment regarding the "new" flag being rather unreliable. This has been something Erik has mentioned for years, literally, and which I've agreed has to be fixed--for years. The solution is less obvious, especially when we want to make the "new flag" work from multiple computers. So that has to be saved in the 8052.com database for each user. And considering we have thousands of users and thousands of messages I still haven't decided an efficient way to implement that. Which is why the problem still exists years later. :) But once I resolve that problem then a "Next" button will be very easy to implement. You contemplated moving to a "proper" PhP forum once. What happened ? The general response in the past was that very few people wanted to have the forum split into separate forums for separate topics and it seemed most members preferred that we not change forum software. I have since implemented a phpBB forum on one of my other websites (BarcodeIsland.com). It works but I'm less than thrilled. It has some good features but in many senses the forum we're using at 8052.com more closely suits our needs. One major problem is that going to another forum software would require some major changes in function such as the user home pages, the links pages, and other function which are based on the user that is currently logged in. Since I haven't really found a forum software I truly like and any such migration would require some serious modification of the site I have continued to modify the current forum rather than install a new one. Of course, if others here would like to suggest alternate forum software by all means they should reply and make their suggestion. Regards, Craig Steiner |
