EMI is what could 'jeopardize the whole project'!
Transmitting parallel data in that amount you intend, with such fast drivers, not using any symmetrical signal transmission is the best way to allure trouble. I would heavily recommend to use symmetrical signal transmission by using drivers that are slew rate limited. RS485 drivers are ideally suited.
You can directly combine these serial transcievers with 74HC595 chips, like Russell already mentioned.
