Figure 17. Separate Ground for Multiplexed LED Display
Here the power lines of segment driver and digit driver are derived from what is called "raw dc" there, and this raw dc sould be some volts (3 for 7805 for instance) higher than regulated 5v. Well, unless of course they're regulated in the segment and digit drivers (Which is not very unlikely).
